Are people that you know, or people in general, just being really freaking STUPID lately? Share your stories of stupidity here... *grumbles*
My first thing, in the form of administrative government incomptenece... and security. Anyone hear about this?
Al-Qaeda Leader Was Among Prisoners Who Escaped in Afghanistan
Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- An alleged top lieutenant of al-Qaeda terrorist group leader Osama bin Laden was among four people who escaped from a detention center near Kabul in July, the U.S. military command in Afghanistan said.
While the escape was announced by the command in July, the identity of the escapee was reported earlier this week during a court-martial of a U.S. army sergeant accused of maltreating prisoners in Afghanistan, the Combined Forces Command Afghanistan said yesterday in a statement on its Web site.
``The reporting in these articles gives the audience the illusion that the escape and subsequent increased security precautions just happened,'' the command's statement said. ``The search for the four escaped detainees continues.''
The alleged al-Qaeda operative is Omar al-Farouq, the Associated Press reported, citing unidentified U.S. military officials in Washington as saying yesterday. The U.S. revelations about his escape have sparked anger in Southeast Asia where al- Farouq allegedly operated, AP said.
``We know nothing about the escape of Omar al-Farouq,'' AP cited Major General Ansyaad Mbai, an Indonesian anti-terrorism official, as saying yesterday in Jakarta. ``His escape will increase the threat of terrorism in Indonesia.''
Al-Farouq, who was born in Kuwait to Iraqi parents, is said to have joined al-Qaeda in the early 1990s and trained in Afghanistan for three years, AP reported, citing Ken Conboy, a security consultant in Indonesia. He tried unsuccessfully to attend a flight school in The Philippines as part of a planned suicide mission, the report said.
He was captured in Indonesia in 2002 while allegedly planning car and truck bombings against U.S. embassies in Southeast Asian nations, Conboy said, according to AP.
Bagram Air Base
The four prisoners escaped from a detention center at Bagram Airfield near Kabul on July 10, the Combined Forces Command said in its statement. About 500 prisoners are held at the center.
``We need to coordinate security here as soon as possible to anticipate his return,'' AP cited Mbai as saying in Indonesia. ``The escape of al-Farouq could bring fresh wind to the operation of terrorism and could energize the new movement of terrorist actors in Southeast Asia and the world.''
Indonesia has blamed Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian terrorist group linked to al-Qaeda, for bombings in the country, including an attack in October 2002 in Bali that killed more than 200 people.
U.S. and allied forces have more than 21,000 soldiers in Afghanistan combating fighters from al-Qaeda and the Taliban movement, which was ousted from power in 2001 in the U.S.-led war against terrorism.

Uhm..... how STUPID can you be? Just let some of the most wanted people in the world... IN your custody.... in a maximum security prison.... leave?
Also you should know, the escapees claimed that it was pathetically easy to escape from this place.
