The last two days were in the 70s. Beautiful, sunny days... in early January in northwestern New York. Completely unheard of. They completely ANNIHILATED our old heat records from the 30s. It was a wonderful oasis of early summer.
This was followed immediately by last night and today. Last night there was a downdraft... we got insane winds, pounding rain, etc. All today we had sustained windspeeds in the 60s. The power went on and off. The district next to us was cancelled, and we had an hour without it in school (with many cheers from the students ) I'm an extreme weather fanatic, so I was absolutely loving this combination of unusually pleasant weather followed by unusually intense weather.
So it's great
Of course, to add to the serious side of the overall implications of this.. is probably a result of the relatively recent climate shift. Don't be denying this stuff now. Whatever you want to call it.. climatic trend shift, global warming, "Climatia" (I'm rather fond of that one ) .. you just can't say it doesn't exist, regardless of your opinion. There is no debate, it's an undisputed fact. And while this warmth is great right now, being 40 degrees warmer than normal is gonna really suck cometh summer. Right now, I'd like to make a prediction of a 20% increase in the number of 95 degree Fahrenheit and over days.
So.. to add meaning to my temporary pleasure... I'd just like to say that my concern over the environment is ever growing. Yes, the environment. Yup, that thing that hippies love, and that we are all 100% dependent on for our survival. And that I only hope that the earth isn't already too fucked up to fix.
The other day, there were several dozen severe tornadoes in the US. In January. The last time there was a tornado in January in these regions was the 50s. It never happens-- but we had an entire chain.
It's all linked. There's one world... with a global trend of overall warming, that's not necessarily going to make stuff hotter everywhere. But what it's going to do is alter the climate significantly. And we'll probably face a lot of hard decisions and serious consequences due to our neglect in the past collectively as a species. Polluting the Earth to an extreme extent, doing whatever we want, without considering that there may be repercussions.
For the sake of humanity, I hope that some of the more extreme predictions will not come to pass, and that we'll be able to correct our past wrongs. I'd prefer it if if the gulf stream doesn't collapse and plunge Europe and western Asia into a new ice age. I hope that Australia, Africa, and Central and Southern North America don't turn into desert. I hope that the ice caps don't melt more extensively, flooding the coastal regions and killing all the fish after the salinity of the ocean gets hosed.
I'm just happy that the issue is finally receiving more attention than it has in the past.
Whatever. Crappy poorly-formed rant. I'm irritated with humanity. Feel free to add your thoughts
